How to plan your trip in a busy city to avoid the crowd?

The one thing that worries me about Chris visiting Hong Kong for the first time was the rushing and busy life that makes a lot of newcomers unbreathable.  It is very difficult for a visitor who is not used to city life to adapt to the lifestyle here.

After staying in Hong Kong for a few months, we learnt the trick to plan a trip to avoid the crowd.  First,  schedule the visit of any tourist spots on weekdays.  For us, we like to go hiking.  So we do all of our hikes on weekdays.  Most of the time, we had the trails to ourselves and you will probably meet only locals on the trail.  Bonus is that you can talk to the locals to learn about any side trails or the history of the place.  Second, schedule all the city shopping on weekends.  The city will be busy 24x7 anyway, so it doesn't really matter if it is a bit crowded on weekends.  During our stay, we kept this pattern all the time and got a chance to enjoy the quietness of Hong Kong.  It also gave us an opportunity to test our YouTube video shooting skills.  We were less shy while shooting and not surrounded by many people.

What did I mean by having a trail to ourselves?  Take a look at this YouTube video about our hike at the Little Great Wall in Cheung Chau!

When you are being tricked to go inside a cave alone..

Every time when I watched the video about Chris going into Cheung Po Tsai caves alone, I could not help but laugh.  He was alone in the caves with all the locals and had no idea that the entrance and exit are not the same!  People kept entering the caves without stopping and Chris was wondering if the caves would be full and how to exit.  You can see from his face in the video, he was a bit panic and confused...haha

It was so crowded that I decided not to enter the caves but I also forgot to tell Chris about the separate entrance and exit.  At the end, he followed the crowd in the caves and survived.

Check out his Cheung Po Tsai cave journey here!

Hong Kong is just a typical busy city? No way!

If you have to use one word to describe Hong Kong, what is in your mind? City? Busy? Crowded? Metropolitan?

Yes, if you see Hong Kong from a tourist's perspective, these are the words.  But growing up here, I know that this place offers more than just a crowded city that never sleeps.  It is not difficult to experience some laid-back vibes on the outlying islands with just a 1-hour boat ride away from the city.  Cheung Chau is definitely one of them!   Though it is a bit "touristy" as well, however, you can get away from a busy city quite easily here.  There are still a lot of quiet spots on the island that you can hide away from everybody.

During our trip to Cheung Chau, our first visiting spot on Cheung Chau was Cheung Po Tsai Caves.  However, while approaching there, we saw a big crowd going in the same direction.  To avoid the crowd, we chose to re-route it to a Tin Hau Temple just next to Cheung Po Tsai Caves.  Check out our Cheung Chau Part 1 Video on YouTube and learn some brief traditions of the temple with my little narration :)

A bit of status update...

In the past few months, we have been in Hong Kong visiting our family and friends.  After 5 years being away from home, it was so nice to see all the familiar faces again.  It was the first time for Chris to visit Hong Kong.  Of course, he was acting like an exciting tourist wandering around the city every day.  That means I have been a private tour guide for this exciting tourist..haha..

During the trip, it also gave us an opportunity to practice our video-shooting skills (and our courage to speak in front of the camera while being surrounded by the crowd).  This trip was definitely a trial run for our World Vagabonding journey as we will be documenting our big journey on YouTube.  Even though the quality may not be the best, it was a golden chance for us to test the skills and responses.

Our recent videos recorded our journey to Cheung Chau, one of the famous outlying islands in Hong Kong.  On weekends, it can get very busy (especially the coming weekend May 26, 2023 because the bun festival and parade will be happening on that day).  If you would like to avoid the crowd like us, it is best to pick a weekday to visit the place.

Getting a little bit social....

We decided to start a YouTube channel to record the bits and pieces of our World Vagabonding journey. Please bear with us that we are not digital gurus, but we will try our best to record our memories as much as we can. We are not professional, but we will give it a try.

I am still a little bit hesitant about the whole YouTube thing for several reasons. First, English is not my first language. I am shy to talk to people over the phone, not to say asking me to demonstrate my broken English to the public. Second, there are thousands of YT channels doing similar things already. How can we compete with them on viewership? Even though I am struggling with all this anxiety, the one next to me (you know who) feels enthusiastic to give it a try anyway.

Okay, let's do it! I keep telling myself that I am doing it for recording memories and mostly, telling my friends that I am still ALIVE. Other YouTubers' successes are none of my business. Even if the videos get no views, who cares? Second, I can always be the camera-man instead of speaking in front of the camera. Even though I use my broken spoken English, who cares?

So, here you go! Our YouTube Channel: @WorldVagabonding
