Preface

Start with WHY, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO

WHY

The reason for writing this story is to encourage everyone to reflect how we are connected and the things we are in common.  We want to show you how our history, our nature, and our society connects us all.  There is no better way to do this than by going from place to place overland.  From exploring history to experiencing local traditions, we hope to prove that the world is connected as one.

Our planet is a valuable asset which deserves everyone's protection.  There are some people who feel like they are forced to protect the environment from climate change or else there will be negative consequences.  Although there are truths to this, we wish to motivate everyone to take actions to protect the environment by demonstrating how amazing our planet is and all the wonderful things we have to protect.

WHAT

We plan to travel 1,000,000KM overland without flying in order to reach all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and explore the places in between these sites.

World Vagabonding hopes to tell the story through learning about:
  • the history
  • the natural beauty
  • the connection of different societies
  • what has happened on this planet

WHERE

Physically, the places that we will be going will be all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the 1,000,000KM of distances we would need to travel in between these sites to make this a possibility.  In order to do this trip, in the most environmentally-friendly way, we hope to use mostly mass transits and avoid unnecessary detours.  We will travel from one site to the next physically closest site as logistically possible.  We will also try to visit tentative world heritage sites as we do not wish to double back if any of them from an area that we are visiting turns into a world heritage site after we have visited that region.

WHEN

We are starting December 2023, expecting the journey to take upwards of twenty years.  To make such a large time frame more manageable, we have chosen to break up this journey into chapters.  Each chapter would last about a year.  Chapter 1 will happen mostly in 2024 and will be about going from Toronto to Hong Kong without flying.

Logistics plays a critical role in the story as we will do our best to reduce our carbon footprint and utilize our time wisely.   We put an emphasis on efficiency and environmental impact in visiting the sites and telling the story.  This means we may be talking about ancient history and an area of natural beauty at the same time as it is efficient to visit these places together :)

WHO

Normally, this section would cover a person holding the camera or taking selfies in front of different places. But, that's not who we are going to talk about here. Yes, there is a backstory to the people holding the camera or doing the editing, but we are not really interested in that or what they did eat for breakfast.

"World Vagabonding" is a story of the world, EVERYONE, including you.  When telling this story, we will not put too much spotlight on us, a.k.a, the pen as in the term of a book.  We believe content and experience is more important in writing "World Vagabonding" instead of "the pen".  No matter who you are and who is reading this, we would like to invite you to vagabond with us.

To ensure you that "the pen" is not a novice and starts vagabonding without any solid experience, we will give a little information about us.  I (Chris) started a global circumnavigation trip in May of 2017 and completed the trip without flying in June of 2018 (the route can be found on the left of this page).  I met Cammy along the way and she traveled overland and sea with me between Auckland to Papeete
and Valpriraso to New York.  So we have some experience in traveling without flying and wish to bring that experience forward to the task of writing this story.
Enjoy the little things, one day you look back and realize they were big things.
